Venice Marco Polo Airport is an airport located on the Italian mainland near Venice in Italy, in Tessera, a frazione of the commune of Venice nearest to Mestre. The airport was named after the Venetian traveler Marco Polo, who is considered the European rediscoverer of China. With 6.893.644 passengers having passed through the airport in 2008, it is the fourth largest Italian airport in terms of air traffic. The airport is modern, busy and fairly efficient. You should think about your travel plans in advance, as travel within Venice can be time-consuming, and the location of your hotel will determine your best route from the airport. The airport is connected to the nearby railway station of Venice-Mestre and to the bus terminal of Venice-Piazzale Roma by scheduled bus services and to Piazza San Marco by water taxi. Car rental is also located at the Venice airport, which can be good option to choose for your transport to the hotel. A modern terminal, opened in 2002 but already close to its full capacity, hosts all scheduled and charter flights, including some long-haul connections by Air Transat to Toronto-Pearson and Montréal-Trudeau, Delta Air Lines to New York-JFK and Atlanta-Hartsfield, Emirates Airline to Dubai, and US Airways to Philadelphia. The airport has a range of shops and eating places. After security there is the usual range of duty-free shopping, with a good choice of shops for travelers looking for an expensive scarf, watch or similar gifts. You can find a hot meal either airside or landside. Before security there is a self-service cafe-restaurant, and another can be found upstairs after you’ve passed through security. Upstairs there is a panoramic gallery with lagoon views. You’ll find more shops upstairs, a bar selling snacks and pizza slices, and also the good, cheap self-service restaurant which serves pasta.
